Collagen from bovine Achilles’ tendon is incorporated with basic FGF (FGF‑2/bFGF) during the preparation of this membrane. rhFGF-2-impregnated absorbable collagen membranes show significant improvement in measures of gingival recession. The prospect of harnessing the potential of rhFGF‑2 to influence periodontal wound healing in different surgical procedures is an exciting possibility as well. An improved version of the membrane will be out soon, thanks to a Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG; BIRAC/IKP01214/BIG-16/20 ), 16th Cycle from Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
rhFGF-2 impregnated membrane was placed on the recession site and showed favorable clinical healing.
A definite increase in the width of keratinized gingiva (wKG) is appreciable post-therapy (Click on the picture to view the original study).
Potentiates effects of procedures such as coronally advanced flap. (Dr K Rajini.
Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-2 in absorbable membrane class I and class II gingival recession defects – a randomized control trial. Dissertation submitted to KNR University of Health Sciences).
Significantly higher FGF-2 levels were seen from FGF2+Collagen sites at 1-week (p≤0.001), 3-weeks (p≤0.001) and 6-weeks (p=0.03) when compared to sites from Collagen only group. *Significant, **Highly significant.
